General Questions

  • A clinical nutritionist is someone that works with clients one on one with a foundational approach in functional nutritional medicine. Treatment is personalised to you as an individual, and includes one or a combination of nutritional supplements, dietary and lifestyle suggestions as well as blood testing, genetic and/or functional testing. As a practitioner with personal and professional expertise in MTHFR and methylation, my protocols are founded in evidence-based, advanced nutrigenomic interventions (as applicable to you).

All treatments and interventions will be created in collaboration with you, taking into account your needs, goals, means, and overall health and wellbeing goals.

  • We are very different from dieticians. Clinical nutritionists are trained in how to use and prescribe nutrients therapeutically through supplementation. Dieticians usually work in hospital or outpatient care settings, with diet only. If you have any further questions about your specific needs or what I can do for you as a clinical nutritionist, please book a FREE health strategy call here.

  • I do not work directly with doctors in a clinical setting. However, as a clinical nutritionist, I work in conjunction with allied health providers including doctors, osteopaths and psychologists to help you achieve your health and wellbeing goals. This is to ensure best practice requirements for safe, effective and collaborative care and is the most important treatment priority. We support you with your doctors and other health professional recommendations, complementing these practices. We do not diagnose, prescribe medications or claim to cure disease.

  • I am a degree qualified nutritionist through Torrens University Australia. I hold a bachelor’s degree in health science (Clinical Nutrition). I’m also a functional genomics institute practitioner undergoing continuing genomic practitioner education to bring you the very best, evidence based practices. I am a member of the Australasian Association of Practicing Clinical Nutritionists (AAPRN) for practising clinical nutritionists (CPNs) and a member of Australian Natural Therapies Association (ANTA).

  • I offer a range of consultations and services to accommodate different people’s needs. The specific fees are based on the type, for example new clients require an initial consultation and existing clients require return consultations. Fees are also dependent on the duration of the appointment, as well as whether you are an international or Australian resident. To read more about the specific consultation fee’s applicable to you, click here.

  • Each consultation involves a comprehensive range of questions that are directed at understanding your health concerns and how your health concerns manifest for you. Together, we look at any and all prior functional or genetic testing and pathology, as well as health history, family history, diagnosed medical conditions, signs and symptoms. I also conduct a comprehensive nutritional and dietary assessment.

The consultation itself informs the creation of an individualised treatment plan tailored to your needs, which we will discuss and work on together at the end of your consultation, addressing any concerns you may have. You will then receive a prescription after your consultation.

Your treatment plan may include one, or a combination of further functional testing recommendations, nutritional supplements, dietary and lifestyle suggestions and action plans based on your values, needs, means and budget. The end goal is to support you in achieving and maintaining sustainable and beneficial long-term health and wellbeing outcomes.

  • Great question.

Individual consultations are best for individuals looking to explore what nutritional medicine can offer and those with concerns about the costs of treatment. Packages and programs are designed to support individuals with complex and chronic illness, seeking longer term and structured support. I have designed these packages to be more affordable than single consultations and to avoid later costs associated with treatment. Packages are all inclusive of some functional tests, all consultations (initial, return and acute consultations), prescriptive advice, pathology and functional testing interpretation, and additional resources including all relevant condition, dietary and nutrient resources at no additional cost to you.

I am in the process of creating a heath quiz to help you determine which service is best suited to your needs and health goals. In the meantime, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to fill out a contact form and I will get back to you within 3-4 working days. You may also like to book a free 15-minute health strategy call here where I can help you decide what program or service may be most suited to you. Discovery calls are a great way to ask questions, and help you decide whether I am the practitioner most suited to help you.

  • Yes, absolutely. Many of my clients are currently on medications prescribed by their doctor or psychiatrist.

As a clinical nutritionist, my approach is designed to complement your current medical care, not replace it. Methylation, MTHFR & Health Questions

  • Methylation is a complex biological process within our bodies that occurs more than a billion times per second. It involves the transfer of a "methyl group" from a donor molecule to an “acceptor molecule”. Put simply, methylation describes our genetic expression in response to the internal and external environment. It could be thought of as an on and off switch in the body, where different biological processes are activated or deactivated.

Many factors, including your genetics (like the MTHFR gene), diet, lifestyle, and environmental exposures, can influence how well your methylation pathway’s function or dysfunction. This is known as “epigenetics”.

When methylation is dysfunctional, either imbalanced, too slow or compromised by the internal or external environment, it can lead to a wide range of health issues and disorders, including mental health, behavioural or neurological disturbances, chronic fatigue and hormonal disorders or imbalances, infertility, detoxification issue and more.

Methylation oriented therapies have formed the cornerstone of my personal health journey, and professional expertise in overcoming complex and chronic illness. Learning about how to influence my genetic blueprint founded the basis of my recovery and has enabled me to help others with great efficacy and clinical precision.

If you’d like to read more about my experience with MTHFR and methylation, and how I became so passionate about advanced nutrigenomics and functional nutritional medicine, please follow the links to the about me page.

  • MTHFR stands for “methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase”. The MTHFR gene produces the MTHFR enzyme, a key player involved in methylation (“One carbon metabolism”), specifically folate and homocysteine metabolism.

Whilst everyone has an MTHFR gene, up to 70 percent of the global population is estimated to have an MTHFR single nucleotide polymorphism. Thus, the term “MTHFR” is generally used to describe individuals with MTHFR single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).

Individuals with MTHFR SNPs can be predisposed to significant physical, mental and neurological health issues, including anxiety, depression and other seemingly unrelated concerns that often aren’t responsive to conventional treatment.

To read more about my experience with MTHFR and methylation, and how I became so passionate about advanced nutrigenomics and functional nutritional medicine, click here.

  • Genetic testing is the most certain way to know whether you have MTHFR or other genetic variants that can contribute to methylation issues. However, as a practitioner, your health concerns are a prominent clue.

Some of the health conditions associated with MTHFR variants and methylation dysfunction include, but are not limited to:

    1. Cardiovascular disease eg. hypertension, high cholesterol.

    2. Infertility, pregnancy complications and hormonal disorders eg. miscarriages, pre-eclampsia, endometriosis, PCOS, PMS and uterine fibroids.

    3. Mental health disorders eg. depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, panic disorder.

    4. Neurological disorders eg. Autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, ADD.

    5. Allergies and/or Histamine Intolerance eg. Skin allergies, eczema, allergic rhinitis, asthma, migraines and headaches, nasal congestion, hives

    6. Chronic fatigue, low energy or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)/ME

    7. Cognitive or memory problems eg. dementia, alzheimers disease

    8. Autoimmune diseases eg. IBD, Rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto’s or Graves disease.

    9. Digestive disorders eg. bile insufficiency, IBS, fat malabsorption or gallstones.

Please note this is not an all exhaustive list.

  • Methylation plays a critical role in brain health by influencing neurotransmitter production (like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA), detoxification, immune function and inflammation. MTHFR variations can impair these processes, contributing to cognitive and behavioural changes, mood dysregulation or imbalances, sleep disturbances, immune deficiency and more.

  • Methylation is heavily involved in breaking down histamine via the diamine oxidase (DAO) enzyme produced by AOC1 genes and Histidine-N-methyltransferase (HNMT) enzymes produced by HNMT genes. Compromised DAO and HNMT activity can contribute to histamine intolerance, which is an inability to properly metabolise and remove histamine from the body.

Histamine issues and histamine intolerance not only cause typical “allergy” symptoms like allergic rhinitis, eczema and asthma, it can also contribute massively to anxiety, fatigue, mood swings, changes in blood pressure, diarrhoea and more. Histamine intolerance is heavily associated with SIBO, dysbiosis, parasites and other gut health issues.

  • Yes. Absolutely. Genetic testing provides incredibly valuable information and direct to consumer, comprehensive genetic testing is beneficial for many. However, the abundance of information can leave you feeling confused, overwhelmed and even frustrated.

As a practitioner with personal and professional experience interpreting these results for clients, I can provide you with clinically relevant meaningful insights into how your genetics impacts your health and what supplements or lifestyle and dietary advice is most suited to you based on your genetic blueprint. I wont just tell you to take this, do this or not do that, I focus on helping you learn about your health, illness and genetics and the steps you can take to optimise your health and wellbeing by understanding them.

This can take the confusion, overwhelm and guesswork out of the equation, whilst helping you achieve and maintain long lasting beneficial health outcomes. To read more about my story with methylation and MTHFR, follow the link here.

  • Absolutely. MTHFR is a predisposing factor for many conditions. This means it increases the risk of certain health conditions and can make it very difficult for some to respond to even the best of treatments (Like me!).

I wont just tell you to take this, do this or not do that, I focus on helping you learn about your genetics and the steps you can take to optimise your health and wellbeing by understanding your genetic blueprint.

  • This is a difficult question to answer, as each person is unique and healing is a non-linear journey. Your needs and support requirements may differ significantly depending on your initial and developing health concerns and your response to treatment. As a result, the frequency of your consultation needs will change.

    For individual consultations:

Typically, a greater frequency of consultations is expected within the initial time of your support, then they will be extended out in frequency. For example, within the first three months, you may need a consultation every 2-4 weeks. After that, you may only need support every 4-8 weeks.

Generally, clients should expect to see health improvements within 4-12 weeks.  For best outcomes in complex and chronic cases, I have found that most clients need a minimum of three to six months of support. Others may need up to 12 months or more to get the best health and wellbeing outcomes for more complex and chronic health concerns. For preconception care, at a minimum, please allow a minimum of 3 months (120 days).

  • Yes. If you cancel within 48 hours of the scheduled time of consult, and you do not wish to reschedule, you can opt to be fully refunded for your appointment. For more information, please read the cancellation policy terms and conditions using the link at the bottom of this page.

  • As a practitioner, I have practitioner access to over 300 different functional tests, through various functional testing providers.

Some of the functional tests available include:

    • Omega 3 Indexes

    • MTHFR gene testing (specifically MTHFR only).

    • Comprehensive genetic testing (looking at hundreds of known genetic variants, not just MTHFR).

    • Microbiome Testing through CoBiome (Microba).

    • Hair, tissue and mineral analysis (HTMA) for heavy metals and mineral levels in the body.

    • Organic Acids Testing (OAT). This looks at metabolic and nutritional pathways. It is one of the foundational tests I use to evaluate methylation in my practice.

    • Mycotoxin profiles which look at mould exposure and the toxins produced by mould in the body

  • The cost of functional tests vary significantly based on the type of test needed. They range from approximately $100 to $700. If you are interested in doing a functional test, or I recommend that you do one, I will discuss with you in detail all costs, turnaround times, the processes involved and the benefits of this for your treatment so you can make an informed decision and feel confident in where you spend your money.

  • No. You don’t. Whilst it is not a requirement, please know that at any point throughout your treatment, I may recommend doing further blood testing or functional testing.

Please be assured, that while these tests are sometimes quite expensive, I will only ever recommend the most cutting edge, backed by science and reliable test that complements or significantly enhances your treatment and health outcomes. These results will be available to you, and interpreted to enhance your treatment plan, as needed.

  • I have both personal and professional experience in supporting people with eating disorders. This is one of my main passions as a clinical nutritionist, helping support other people with their recovery journey. In general, I will work with you and discuss a way to work alongside your care team. If you have any concerns, please feel free to reach out to me via the contact form below or book a free health strategy call through the booking portal and I will be more than happy to discuss these with you.

  • Whilst I wouldn’t consider them expensive, please know that you are paying for my time in and outside of consultations. To ensure I am giving you the very best of functional nutritional medicine and advanced nutrigenomics, I spend countless hours researching your case so that I can best support you with the most cutting edge, evidence based and scientifically backed protocols. There are many hours of writing prescriptions, treatment plans, ordering products, functional testing and interpretation, conducting dietary and nutritional analysis, creating dietary plans, custom recipes and other resources to support you as well. I also carry out hours of ongoing practitioner training to ensure I am giving you the best care. The consultation fee’s cover all of these expenses, so while it may seem expensive, it allows me to put in the time needed to ensure you are getting the highest quality, comprehensive care and support.

But please be assured, I have considered the cost of living and I do genuinely appreciate that money is valuable so my consultation fees and packages have been created with this in mind. I also appreciate that not everyone can afford expensive programs and services, so I am more than happy to discuss your concerns and make sure that my treatment protocols and recommendations are within your means. My number one priority is to support you, within your means and I will do my very best to accomodate to your needs, always.
